FRESH AVENUES OF THOUGHT
The great Swiss designer Armin Hofmann sums things up beautifully for us...
‘There should be no separation between spontaneous work with an emotional tone and work directed by the intellect. Both are supplementary to each other and must be regarded as intimately connected. Discipline and freedom are thus to be seen as elements of equal weight, each partaking of the other.’
SPIN PROJECTS opens up fresh avenues of thought and offers fresh possibilities for our practice. The transfer from graphics to products - of looking at objects through a graphic lens - is an idea that has exercised us for some time. This website (and supporting Instagram account) provide us with the space to share these ideas in a meaningful way. We hope that some of these proposals will come to fruition alongside partner creatives and makers.
PARTNERS
To this end we plan to open a dialogue with designers, artists and producers that we respect and admire, in the hope that they will participate in this process. This requires a certain leap of faith from both parties and an understanding that we are coming together to make something new.
We look forward to the announcing these collaborations in due course.
MORE OR LESS
There is a fundamental conundrum that exercises many (if not all) creative endeavours, it is the thinking behind the SPIN projects identity and it might be summed up as less or more.
Is less always more, when is more too much, when is less a bore. More or less in the end is a decision based on judgement and skill. More ideas, more type, more colours does not equate to more meaning. More paint doesn’t make a better painting.
Minimalism when backed up by thoughtful and purposeful application can be incredibly powerful. Less, however, can, and all too often is, an excuse for empty and vacuous recipe driven responses.
More, occasionally described pejoratively as decoration, can be an abomination, can also be sublime. We are interested in achieving a more poetic and intuitive visual language, trying to push ourselves and not accept easy, or comfortable solutions. We are engaged with both more and less, negotiating and reconfiguring the space in between.
SPIN
The SPIN studio is the impetus behind SPIN PROJECTS. Graphic design (in the widest sense) is our passion. We are obsessed by the challenges of a discipline that exists in a state of constant flux. At its best it is thought provoking, memorable and leaves a lasting impression.
Our holistic approach in dealing with the complex requirements of clients is supported by extensive experience delivering rigorous identity systems across all platforms, digital, print and environmental.
‘Over the last 20 years SPIN have firmly established themselves as one of London’s best design studios. Delivering consistently high quality work across a huge range of clients that span the arts, communication, broadcast, design, electronics and entertainment sectors as well as application, their portfolio includes identities, books, marketing campaigns, motion graphics, packaging and websites’.
